In this workshop, you will turn two eggs, one small and one large, and learn how to permanently affix the small egg within a hollow of the large egg so that the small egg is able to move around. We will cover spindle turning techniques, mounting a piece with hot melt glue, and cutting the interrupted surface of a lathe-mounted object. We will also turn a simple pedestal to mount and display your egg sculpture.

Tools recommended:

Bowl gouge (required, 1/2” bar diameter gouge recommended)

Spindle gouge or skew (optional)

Spindle roughing gouge (optional)

Parting tool or bedan (optional)

Michael Anderson is a woodturner Chattanooga, TN, and is a member of the Tri-State Woodturners. He enjoys alternating between turning traditional calabash forms and sculptural pieces. Quite often, Michael’s pieces are embellished post-turning with woodburning, carving, and painting. However, sometimes the natural wood tones are the star and need no enhancements.

Minors are allowed if accompanied by a parent.

Intermediate skills recommend, but beginners are still welcome. All wood (and hot melt glue) will be provided for the workshop by Michael, but turners will need to bring turning tools, as well as appropriate clothing and personal safety gear.

Be sure to attend the AWA meeting in the morning (9:00 AM at Hardware Park https://alabamawoodturners.com/meetings/)

Are Minors allowed? Only if accompanied by parent.

What to wear: You must dress safely and appropriately. Arrive for class in long pants, and closed-toe, closed-heel shoes with socks that protect up to the ankle. Long sleeves should be avoided if possible and rolled up if necessary. Long hair must be tied back and dangly necklaces, earrings or other accessories shall be removed before starting the class. Additional protective gear will be provided as needed. Masks may be required depending on circumstances.
