ALABAMA WOODTURNER'S ASSOCIATION CLASS SERIES: Turn a Bowl With a Fluted Rim

(free for all AWA members)

This project will be demonstrated at the AWA Meeting the same morning. This class session will allow you to apply what you learn at the meeting. Participants should bring a bowl gouge, a spindle gouge, and a parting tool if possible; otherwise AWA will provide tools as necessary.

Attendance at the morning meeting and some prior experience turning a bowl are prerequisites.

About the Instructor:

Tommy Hartline

I work at Gadsden State Community College where I serve as the Division Chair for Engineering Technologies and teach Electronics.

I have been turning for about 15 years and am a founding member of the North Alabama Woodturners. I am also a member of the Northwest Georgia Woodturners and the American Association of Woodturners. Some of the things I turn are bowls, hollow forms and boxes. But my favorite things to turn are Christmas ornaments. I turn several styles including inside-out and segmented.

I have turned with Jimmy Clewes, John Jordan, Michael Mocho, Joe Ruminski, Rudy Lopez, Don Russel, Kimberly Winkle, Mark St.Leger, John Beaver, Liam O'Neal, David Ellsworth and many local turners. I am always looking to learn something new.

Are Minors allowed? Only if accompanied by parent.

What to wear: You must dress safely and appropriately. Arrive for class in long pants, and closed-toe, closed-heel shoes with socks that protect up to the ankle. Long sleeves should be avoided if possible and rolled up if necessary. Long hair must be tied back and dangly necklaces, earrings or other accessories shall be removed before starting the class. Additional protective gear will be provided as needed. Masks may be required depending on circumstances.
