ALABAMA WOODTURNER'S ASSOCIATION CLASS SERIES: Turning a Bowl
(free for all AWA members)
Description: The class will focus on turning a conventional bowl using a bowl gouge. There will be plenty of waste blanks for practicing the various cuts before turning a bowl. There should be plenty of blanks left over for those who want to practice at home. The class will be preceded by a demonstration at the Alabama Woodturners Association (AWA) meeting that morning. Class participants should plan to attend the morning meeting. Participants should bring their own bowl gouge and face shield if possible; otherwise AWA will provide.
About the instructor: Staten Tate started woodturning 15 years ago when seeing a bowl woodturning demo at an AWA meeting in Birmingham. Prior to that he had been grinding up wood with various equipment as far back as he can remember. Since then he's been grinding up wood mainly with the lathe. Now he mainly turns bowls, platters, vases, hollow forms and the occasional ornament and jeejaw. For the last few years he has been adding more carved and textured elements to his work and exploring dyes, paints and different finishes as well as hybrid castings.
