Far beyond making a bowl, this class will cover a wide range of topics.  We will start with learning the primary function of all the hand tools from gouges to chisels, and even carbide tools, and apply this knowledge using the tools on turning wood.  Of course we’ll cover lathe operation and accessories, and if interested can discuss how to choose a lathe for yourself.  Then we’ll focus on different areas of the craft, such as turning between centers, use of chucks, turning with grain running parallel to the lathe bed, turning with grain perpendicular, turning wet wood or dry.  Along the way we will complete numerous exercises and projects in each of these areas.  In addition we will cover other essential skills such as sharpening, sanding, and finishing.

           - Day 1:  Introduction, safety, lathe operation, proper use of basic turning tools: spindle roughing gouge, spindle gouge, parting tool, skew chisel, bowl gouge, scraper, and carbide tools.    Students will try a hands-on exercise for each tool.

          -  Day 2:  Turning between centers, grain parallel to axis.   How to choose proper tool to create classic shapes: beads, coves, ogee, filets, etc. How to match a design.  Turn a finished project such as a candleholder.  Sanding and finishing on the lathe with friction polishes. How to sharpen spindle tools.

          -  Day 3:  Turning a bowl, understanding grain perpendicular to axis, use of chucks, making correct tenon to suit straight or dovetail chuck jaws, use of bowl gouges, scrapers, carbide tools.  Sanding and finishing a bowl with food-safe products.  How to sharpen bowl gouges and scrapers.

          -  Day 4: More work with parallel grain between centers and also in a chuck.  Review use of spindle tools and matching a design.  Turn a goblet and/or a lidded box.  Sanding and finishing with lacquer or other products.

          -  Day 5: More work with perpendicular grain.  Learn about different types of bowl gouges.  Turn a vase in side-grain.  Sanding and finishing.  Where to go from here.  Conclusion.

About the Instructor: Carl Cummins has been woodturning as a primary activity for over 10 years.  He has studied extensively from books, videos, workshops, symposiums, and formal training from nationally and internationally known leaders in the field including David Ellsworth and Jean-Francois Escoulen.  Instead of specializing, Carl enjoys a wide variety of woodturning projects including bowls, boxes, practical items, and eccentric art pieces.
